Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) first appeared on our screens back in Iron Man 2, a prequel which saw Robert Downey Jr. fighting it against Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash. With the female superhero being such a prominent character in the Marvel films, and with confirmed stand-alone films such as Dr Strange coming to our screens, there has been talks of giving Johansson her very own movie.
Scarlett Johansson has played the character since 2010, featuring not only in the Iron Man films, but in Marvel’s Avengers and most recently Captain America: Civil War. A prominent and strong female character in the superhero franchise, it makes sense for the talented actor and skilful crime-fighter to have her own film, right?
Standalone films for the Marvel series are becoming more popular with the rise of Dr. Strange (2016) and Black Panther (2018) soon to hit the big screen. It seems as if characters who were popular from the comics, but not too well known to the general public, are now attractive as ever.
When asked about the likely hood of a Black Widow film, Kevin Feige (Studio Director for Marvel) said that the team were really committed to making it happen. Kevin then went on to say:
“We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise”
This is big news for the growth of Marvel and something that we should all be excited about in the next 5 years.
